Water Safety Instructor Course

This course trains WSI candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions, and how to evaluate participants’ progress. 

The courses and presentations include Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim, three adult courses as well as the Basic Water Rescue course and the Personal Water Safety course.

How do I enroll?

To enroll, instructor candidates must be at least 16 years of age on or before the last day of the training and successfully complete the pre-course session which includes a demonstration of swimming skills at Learn-to-Swim Level 4. 


Email the WSI Trainer AngelaReeve@optonline.net at least one week prior to the first day of class (if not sooner) to request the pre-course materials and arrange for a time to come in and complete the pre-requisite swim skills evaluation.

Course Details

This course is offered in a blended learning format and candidates will have online lessons to complete before attending each of the in-person skill sessions listed below.  Candidates can expect to spend approximately 20 hours outside of the class devoted to reading, preparing written lesson plans, and completing the online component.  While hard copy materials will be supplied for use in class, candidates are encouraged to access the free digital versions of the required textbooks well in advance so they can start their reading and preparations.
