A Message from Michael Kelly, C.O.O.

Happy October! I hope this message finds you and your families healthy and safe.

We continue the march towards normalcy with EXPANSION of:

  • Weekday evening hours to 10 PM beginning October 5!
  • Group Wellness classes – keep an eye out for more updates this week!

I have had many Members tell me that things are beginning to feel like the “old days”.   I agree – we have been fortunate to not have a Member or Staff person test positive for COVID-19 while we were open.  That said, we have protocols in place that include notification and contact tracing procedures.

In order to implement those protocols, we need to be aware when a Member:

  • Tests Positive
  • Is exposed to someone who tests positive
    • Lives in the same household
    • Is being quarantined from school
    • Has had “close contact”
      • Anyone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes starting from 48 hours before the person began feeling sick until the time the patient was isolated.
      • Considered close contact if wearing a face covering during the exposure.

Please call the Front Desk (203-869-1630 ext 500) or email frontdesk@gwymca.org with a cc to mkelly@gwymca.org should you meet any of the above.

Further, in order to keep COVID-19 outside the Y we need to follow the basics.  At the risk of repeating myself, we are still experiencing noncompliance on some basic practices:

  • Face coverings need to be worn at all times
    • Only exceptions are in the pool and when exercising vigorously 12 feet or more from your neighbor.
    • Face covering needs to cover nose and mouth.
  • You need a reservation in order to enter the building.
    • As a courtesy to your fellow Members and Staff, please stop manipulating the reservation system with fictitious reservations or operating outside your reserved area.
  • Lane sharing has the two sharers enter/start/stop/exit on opposite sides.
    • I shared a lane today for an hour without any issue

Last point – Mason Street Parking lot has cones in place for when the rear section is used for classes.  Please do not move the cones and park in these sections – it reduces the space available for these popular classes for those who feel comfortable exercising outside.  Further, it is dangerous for Staff and Members when you return to retrieve your vehicle while class is in session.  One can either park using street parking or our Putnam Avenue surface and underground parking – there have been plenty of spaces in the underground lot.

Stay Healthy, Safe & Thriving!
