The C.O.O. Corner – A Message from Michael Kelly, C.O.O.

I hope this message finds you and your families healthy and safe.

UPDATES FROM AROUND THE STATE

The CT COVID-19 news this week comes from two part of the state.  From Hartford, the Governor updated the face covering policy to permit subset of people (i.e., suffering from a medical condition, child in a childcare environment, anyone under the age of 2) NOT to comply with face covering requirements, PROVIDED that they have the appropriate documentation (e.g., licensed medical provider or state agency that supports the disabled).   For those from a qualified subgroup, you should bring multiple copies of your supporting documentation to the Y for filing with the Front Desk as well as having on your person and sharing with the appropriate Y staff (e.g., Lifeguard/Aquatics Coach, Wellness Associate, Group Exercise instructor, etc.)  We also ask that you endeavor to maintain a minimum distance of six feet between yourself and your fellow Members or Staff.

From Storrs, home of the University of Connecticut main campus, residential students returned this week to prepare for the upcoming semester.  We have recently learned that there have been social gatherings where the basic protocols of distance and face covering were not followed as well as positive tests for faculty and students, including six members of the UConn football team that lead to the pausing of team practice.  It is yet another reminder that the compliance journey is a marathon and not a sprint.  We need to maintain our diligence for the long term by following the rules or we run the risk of “pausing” our activities as well.

HERE FOR YOU

This week would normally be our Maintenance Shutdown period but we have remained open and are serving our Membership.  Our Aquatics teams are heading into a brief respite before they resume on a full scale basis after Labor Day.  That said, Aquatics teams have and will continue to conduct tryouts for the Fall season.  Members may find additional lanes available so please check the schedule for increased capacity.

REMINDERS & NEW UPDATES

  • Operating Hours expansion is as follows (effective September 8 – day after Labor Day):
    • Monday through Friday – 5 AM – 8 PM
    • Saturday and Sunday – 7 AM – 5 PM
      • We will be monitoring Member usage during these new hours and may continue to modify the schedule.
  • Wednesday, August 26 – Delivery of the Alumni Seresco System
    • The system will be lifted by crane to the roof from the Mason Street Parking lot prior to our opening that day. The crane will be delivered to the parking lot early Wednesday morning and while we are targeting completion by our 6 AM opening, the crane will be stored in the back of the Mason Street parking lot until Wednesday night as vehicles of its size need to travel off hours.
    • A good day to use our other parking spots (Putnam Ave. lot and garage) for all of next Wednesday. Please be sure to bring your membership card for access through the garage.
  • Friday, August 28 – Swim Team Time Trial
    • As the Swim Team has been training hard and with no “formal”/”usual” swim meets on the horizon, we want to have the team see the benefits of their labors this summer. We will be handling over multiple sessions throughout the day and will assure social distancing and face covering protocols are followed.
    • No Dive or Water Polo practice on the day.
    • Lap lanes for Member swim will be open throughout the day.
  • Child Watch is returning! Stay tuned for updates on this service and model.
  • Mark your calendars for Fall Programming! Member Registration begins for all Youth Land-Based Programs and Swim Lessons on Tuesday, September 8.

Stay Healthy and Safe!
